Volunteer Opportunities
The Hollywood Queer Short Film Festival is an (almost) all-volunteer effort. We need a lot of volunteers to make it happen, and most of the opportunities listed below do not require experience. To volunteer for any of the positions, email Festival Director Jim Hoffman at hoffmanjamm@gmail.com, and include the words HQSFF Volunteer in the subject line. Your email should specify what you’re volunteering for, even if it’s a same-day on-hand assistant. A few words about why you’re qualified for the job would be much appreciated.
This year’s HQSFF is scheduled for October 2, 3, and 4, at the glamorous Hudson Theater on Santa Monica Boulevard. All of the positions listed below will become more intense as the festival date approaches. Some will require more early effort than others, particularly the Sponsor Coordinator.
Sponsor Coordinator: Contacts potential sponsors and signs up any takers. Collects media they submit per the agreements. Ensures they get everything they pay for. Helps sponsors who need help creating something for the slideshow. Helps select logo for program and website. Works with the webmaster to get sponsor links onto the website; collects payments for sponsorships.
Please note: We are willing to pay commission for the right candidate for this position. The sponsor coordinator starts right away, and you will canvass the target neighborhood with Jim on the first pass; then it’s all in your lap.
Selection Committee: Chooses the films that can work in our only four-program format from the hundreds that are submitted. Attends committee meetings during which we view and discuss submitted films. This committee is the heart of the festival. We are particularly seeking to create a diverse Selection Committee that includes women and people of color.
Accounting Specialist: Tracks incoming and outgoing funds; reports directly to the Festival Director; monitors all financial activity and informs leadership regarding any budgetary issues.
Tech Specialist: Runs the projector at the venue. Gathers the media to be presented. Stores and arranges the short films onto media as directed by the Festival Director. Must be on hand during all four programs.
Tech Specialist/Webmaster: Manages the festival website (on Hostinger) and makes necessary changes as authorized by the Festival Director.
Hospitality Coordinator: Handles comp lists to make sure the box office knows who is entitled to free entry. Issues invitations to submit to filmmakers selected by the Festival Director. Prepares festival badges for filmmakers and others (e.g., jury, staff, etc.) who need them.
Social Media Specialist: Creates and publishes an intense campaign on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media. Knows what S.E.O. is about, and has experience using hashtags to accomplish it. This will cover at least the month between the date we open ticket sales and the festival itself.
Graphic Designer: Designs the festival's printed program, which must be completed quickly once we have selected our films and lined up our sponsors. There may be additional design jobs.
Festival Photographer: Takes many pictures of the festival for our website, social media, etc. Experience in photojournalism is a huge plus here. Must attend the festival both days!
DAY OF EVENT: Hands out printed program. Ushers guests to their seats. Assists at the box office. Coordinates parking. (Note: two programs minimum; we encourage volunteers to do all four.) All volunteers will receive comp tickets to programs
